BJP Rajya Sabha member and BJP in-charge of Lakshadweep, Kerala co-in-charge Dr Radha Mohan Das Agarwal made a special mention in the Rajya Sabha about air services to the island. He specifically raised the issue of air services from Kerala to Lakshadweep and inter-island air connectivity between the 10 islands of Lakshadweep in the Rajya Sabha.
Dr. Radha Mohan Das Agarwal later met Jyotiraditya Shinda and apprised him of the plight.
Agarwal said that Lakshadweep does not have adequate medical facilities or centers of higher education and most people have to come to Kerala for general needs. There is only one flight from Kochi to Agathi with a seating capacity of 72 passengers, this is very little. People are unable to come after treatment due to non-availability of flights, there should be at least 5-6 flights per day.
The MP said there are 10 islands in Lakshadweep namely Kavarathi, Agathi, Antroth, Minicoi, Kiltan, Kalpeni, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadamat, Amini and Bangaram, all the people have inter-island relatives, but due to lack of transport services, they are separated from each other. Every day thousands of people face the hardship of traveling.
Dr. Aggarwal said that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is successfully running Inter-City Udan Yojana across the country, Agarwal asked the House why the people of Lakshadweep are being ignored, also requested the Minister to start Inter-Island Halli-Services in Lakshadweep.
