Hon’ble Minister of State for Agriculture visited Lakshadweep.

Kavaratti : Ms. Shobha Karandlaje, Hon’ble Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India visited Lakshadweep from 2nd to 3rd December,


2022. Dr. Rakesh Minhas,IAS, District Collector, UTLA received Hon’ble Minister at Agatti Airport and welcomed to Lakshadweep with a traditional reception. On reaching Kavaratti,Minister was received by Shri. Amit Satija, IAS. As part of the visit Hon’ble Minister made a discussion with Secretaries, Special Secretaries and Departmental Heads of Administration on developmental programmes of Government of India in the meeting held on 2nd December, 2022 in the Secretariat Conference Hall. Thereafter, Hon’ble Minister has visited Indira Gandhi Hospital, Kavaratti and had an interaction with Doctors and Patients.


The Minister also inaugurated State Office of the Lakshadweep Differentially Abled Welfare Association during her visit at Kavaratti.Ms. Shobha Karandlaje, Hon’ble Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India visited KVK- Lakshadweep of ICAR- Central marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on 2ndDecember 2022.

The Hon’ble Minister visited the KVK premises and glanced the technological innovations exhibition held here. She interacted with the farmer /entrepreneur beneficiaries of the KVK. The exhibits comprised of the innovations/technologies of ICAR institutions/Universities that are suitable for the special agro-ecology of the islands, and which are being tested demonstrated by the KVK. Initiatives of ICAR-CMFRI in Lakshadweep, islands especially on the seaweed farming front was also highlighted. 

TheHon’ble Minister appreciated the efforts of the KVK and the ICAR-CMFRI and stressed to identify more such technologies that would benefit coconut farmers, poultry growers and fishermen of Lakshadweep and help them overcome the farming, secondary production, and marketing constraints unique to Lakshadweep.


A farmer’s interaction meet with the farmers and beneficiaries of the KVK was held at Muttiaar Beach, Kavaratti organized jointly by the KVK-Lakshadweep and the Lakshadweep Administration, Department of Agriculture.

Besides the Hon’ble Minister, the Interaction Meet was attended by Shri. Amit Satija, Secretary (Finance), Shri. Shashank Mani Tripathi, Secretary (Agriculture), Shri Rakesh Minhas, District Collector, Shri. Rakesh Kumar, Director (Agriculture) and other officials of the UT administration of Lakshadweep. Shri Shashank Mani Tripathi, Secretary (Agriculture) in his welcome address briefed the Minister and the gathering on the developmental initiatives of the Lakshadweep Administration in agriculture and allied sectors. Dr. V. Venkatasubramanian, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Bengaluru informed the gathering on the works carried out by the KVK in the islands and emphasized on the need for convergence in developmental activities. Appreciating the efforts of the KVK and the Lakshadweep Administration, the Hon’ble Minister stressed on the importance of forming more Farmer Producers Organization (FPO) in all islands of Lakshadweep for overall improvement of coconut farming sector, especially for promoting value - addition and marketing.

She also urged the farmers and the institutions to rightly harness the benefits of the centrally sponsored schemes in agriculture and allied sectors including the 10,000 FPO scheme of Ministry of Agriculture. The Minister released the KVK times, a fortnightly E publication of the ICAR-ATARI, Bengaluru compiled by the KVK-Lakshadweep. The lead farmer beneficiaries of the KVK were also honoured in the function.
