Manju (uru) berthed at kavaratti jetty.

Uru berthed at Azhikal for regular cargo movement from Azhikal port to Lakshadweep. MSV Jaljyoti Uru of Prime Meridian Shipping Company arrived from Gujarat. The service will start as soon as the goods are received.

KV Sumesh MLA, who visited Uru, said that the-service will give a boost to the development of the port and traders, and who want to ship goods should contact the port office. Many years ago, goods were moved from Azhikal to Lakshadweep using Uru. This is restarted with the intervention of the MLA.

Construction materials such as stone, gravel, wire, cement etc. are mainly carried. Coconuts, copra and dried fish will also be brought back. The presence of Reive Station and Valapatnam Cement Company Godown at a distance of three kilometers will increase the possibility of cargo movement. Presently supplies to the island come from Beypur and Mangalore.

As the distance is less compared to Mangalore, the cost of movement of goods from here will be less. Both consumers and traders will benefit from this. Azhikal to Lakshadweep is the same distance from Beypur. Azhiekal port officials and company directors negotiated with the traders in the district to get the goods.

The 282-ton capacity vessel will reach the island in 24 hours. Because of its relatively high speed, it travels at seven nautical miles per hour. There will be six employees including an engineer under the leadership of Captain Arun Ibrahim. Nandu Mohan, director of the shipping company, said that this place is convenient for cargo movement and if we get more goods, we will take the goods to places including Maldives.

Azhikode Grama Panchayat President K. Ajeesh, Senior Port Conservator Ajinesh Matankara, Tug Master M. Riju, Prime Meridian Shipping Company Director Sujith Pallathil and P. Pavithran were also present with the MLA.
