People of Lakshadweep are ready to give a new face to the confrontation with the administration

People of Lakshadweep are ready to give a new face to the confrontation with the administration, NCP, the largest political party in Lakshadweep, is giving a new form of struggle to the demand for a legislative assembly for self-governing power.

Alleging that the Lakshadweep administration has been implementing anti-people policies for two years, the NCP-led strike in Kavarathi has entered its 14th day. The move is to petition the President for autonomy and get support from major political parties in the country.

Decades ago, the then central government had promised to give assembly to Lakshadweep. But Lakshadweep was spared even when the assembly was given including Puducherry.

Initially there was an advisory committee. This committee, including representatives from the island, had enough power to influence the administration of the Lakshadweep administration, Later, when they became panchayats, this committee disappeared.

It was replaced by District Panchayat. The District Panchayat President had the position of Chief Councilor and special powers. But now that too has been changed to only the title of District Panchayat President, No special powers.

The newly introduced Panchayat Regulation Act curtails the existing powers of Panchayats. NCP opposed this in the High Court, Petition filed. There is currently no platform for the people of Lakshadweep to voice their opinion on governance. It is a situation where the elected representatives cannot interfere in the actions of the administration.

Due to the flawed government policies, the sufferings of the people of Lakshadweep are getting worse. There were seven passenger ships to Kochi reduced to two. Speedboats are also no longer needed. About 3,000 contract workers were laid off. Disbursement of scholarship to students has been stopped, there many more in the list.
