CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member Elamaram Karim MP has sent a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking an immediate solution to the Lakshadweep travel crisis. Residents of Lakshadweep are facing an unprecedented crisis with the curtailment of ship services.

Today only two ships are operating in place of 7 ships per week. This has created a huge crisis for the students of Lakshadweep, sick islanders and tourists who want to visit Lakshadweep.

Those who want to travel to the island in emergency situations are not given a seat on the ship. The depth of this helplessness is illustrated by the suicide of Bhavan Khandare, an officer of the Indian Reserve Battalion, who was unable to attend his own daughter's wedding. It should be remembered that this obstacle was not for travel to another country.

Last March, a letter was sent to the Union Home Minister raising the same issue. But not only has no action been taken on the issue even after six months, it is also very disappointing that there is not even a response from the government to the letter. In this context, the people are still struggling due to the travel crisis, and the letter has been issued again asking for the central government's immediate intervention.

It is the responsibility of the central government and the island administration to ensure adequate travel facilities for the islanders. In the letter, the Home Minister has been requested to intervene urgently to ensure the resolution of the issue as soon as possible to avoid the situation of further tragedies.
